Conceived and written by a first generation Afghan-American, Afghan Superstitions is a small art publication featuring various cultural superstitions collected by the author over the years. Paired together with personal memories, anecdotes and photographs of the author’s family, the zine is a visually rich and profoundly illuminating celebration of Afghan culture.

The graphic identity for this publication and accompanying merchandise utilizes the blue and purple color palette found in nazar or evil eye amulets commonly found in Afghan households. The author’s family photographs stretch across the pages. Flipping through the book, one feels as if they’re finding lost keepsake tucked between the pages of an old book.

A family of hand-drawn illustrations accompany the superstitions, themselves, which are conveyed in a bold and memorable typeface. These drawings, childlike and wondrous, are used as distinctive branding devices on posters, t-shirts and tote bags.
